Dphil analytical chemistry
Introduction
The Doctor of Philosophy programmes in Chemistry are designed to prepare candidates to undertake high level independent research work and participate in a wide range of research projects. The coursework, together with research and thesis enhance the cognitive and theoretical understanding of the area of specialization.
The specific objectives of the programmes are to:
1. Train highly qualified manpower for advanced level teaching and research.
2. Develop the highest level of scholarship, research capability and creative thinking in the student’s area of specialization.
3. Apply their expertise in finding solutions to problems of the society.
5. Further the frontiers of knowledge in Chemistry.
Design of the Programme
All the D.phil programmes shall normally consist of coursework, examination and thesis. The minimum course workload shall be 21 units comprising at least 12 units of level 9 (D.Phil.) courses and the balance from level 8 (M.Phil.) courses described under each area of specialization. However, a candidate who had successfully taken the required level 8 courses during the Masters programme may be credited with no more than 9 units towards the D.Phil. course units. An applicant holding recognized masters degree with long experience in research as evidenced by publication and postgraduate teaching at the university level may apply for exception of coursework. All coursework shall be completed in the first year of study.
The unit distribution of coursework, research and thesis shall be as follows:
Year 1
Semester I -12 units of coursework and 3 units of research proposal
Semester II-9 units of coursework and 6 units of research proposal
Year 2=15 units of research
Year 3=15 units of research and thesis
